Opera Parent Meetings

Every month an opera parent meeting
is held in Ms. McGinn’s room.  The
parents are informed of all the latest opera news, and how it connects to theparent meeting
curriculum and our learning.

At the December 4th meeting, the parents learned about their child’s
“concentration stones.”  In the book The Music Inside Me, the main character
had pieces of sea glass to remember all of the special people in his life.

Holding the sea glass in his hand helped the
main character remember and concentrate.
In the same way, the students use their “concentration stones” to help
them concentrate on their work.  Now the
parents can also take their stones to work and to meetings to help them
concentrate!

Trust Walk

In opera class Ms. McGinn read about a famous blind opera singer named Laurie Rubin.

Ms. McGinn talked about going on a trust walk to see how it feels to be a guide and a follower.

1.  THINGS WE SHOULD DO AS A GUIDE:

* be conscious of our surroundings

* provide accurate directions

* talk about what we are seeing

* hold onto the person

* move around obstacles safely

* communicate the whole time

* be his or her eyes and explain everything clearly

* avoid distractions

* help him feel secure

2. The next thing we did was go on a trust walk ourselves.

We got in partners. One person was the guide and the other person was blindfolded.

The guide had to tell his partner where to go and what was in front of him.

It was scary to be led around!  When we went down the stairs, we didn’t know what was coming!

We really had to depend on our partner. It felt like we were free flying!

After a while we felt secure because the person leading  us was getting better at making sure

we would not crash into anything.  We learned about cooperation,

collaboration and trust.

How We Got Our Company Name

To get our company name, first we thought . . .

If our company had a color what would it be and why.

People chose orange, red and yellow because sometimes red, orange and yellow can be in fire.

Isaac said,

“I think we should be red because it is the color of fire, and when you lay down a match and then another match and another,

we grow together. We move together and then when we are sprayed down we all disappear together.

When the matches are put together we make a bigger flame."

Abigail said,
“We are the flames because we explode into great things and we are the fire because we burn the bad inside us.”

We read over the ideas and we thought A LOT about them.We made up some names, said our ideas out loud and then defended them.We thought about which name strongly represented our company.The final four choices were Exploding Flames, Flaming Matches, Sparking Flames and Fire Starters.We voted individually on a piece of paper for privacy.(We are a democracy.) More than half of the class voted for Fire Starters. So, we are Fire Starters Kids Opera Company.

How We Got Our Logo

To get our logo, first we all thought about our company name, Fire Starters Kids Opera Company, and what it represents.

Each of us drew a logo that we thought represents our company best.

We taped our logos on a piece of paper and labeled each one with a letter.There were twenty-two designs.

We voted for the two that best represented the company name.

We narrowed our choices down to two.Then we had a run off with the choices N and Q, the two that received the most votes.

Our logo choice was Q.
