The Executive Board is currently recruiting volunteers to head up committees and positions within our PTA. Please read on for descriptions of some of our vacant positions. I know you have heard it before, but we really cannot carry out the activities we all expect from our school and the PTA without strong volunteers.

We recognize that our RT families are very busy and find it challenging to add one more task to already very full schedules, but it can be done.

Descriptions of Vacant Positions and Committees

Volunteer Coordinating Committee: The coordinators collect and maintain a database of PTA members who are willing to volunteer at RT. Recruiting volunteers requires collecting information in the beginning of the year, including names, emails, phone numbers, etc. Sign up forms should be handed out at the school's open house and sent home on "Backpack Wednesday." The committee maintains an updated list of volunteers, keeps the volunteers informed of school and PTA needs, and connects volunteers with needed services. The volunteer committee also works with the staff volunteer coordinator and keeps track of volunteer hours so the total number of hours per person, can be sent to the MCPS Volunteer office in March. A Volunteer Appreciation event is typically held in June.

Career Fair (2007/2008): This event enables third-grade through fifth-grade students to learn about the world of work through the eyes of RT parents and community volunteers. Some of the jobs that have been showcased at the fair have included: police officers, carpenters, newspaper editors, doctors, veterinarians, day care providers, beauticians, barbers, chefs, musicians, etc. Two or more committee members recruit parent and community volunteers, work with the team of teachers to plan the day, help students to prioritize their choices, and ensure that the presenters know what to do and are thanked for sharing their interests with the future generation.

Enrichment Committee: Provides support to the art, music, and physical education programs at Rolling Terrace. Parent volunteers who are interested and active in these areas help the RT staff plan and coordinate special events and performances, primarily during school hours. Efforts are aimed at ensuring that the children have positive and diverse experiences as well as enriching the school's overall programs.

Fifth Grade Committee: The PTA assists the 5th grade faculty in making the Promotion Ceremony a special event. Parent volunteers help inform families about the specifics of the event, help coordinate field trips, purchase the decorations and refreshments, and help to setup and cleanup on the day of the ceremony. The PTA helps subsidize this event.

Lunch and Recess Committee: The committee works with the RT staff to provide extra eyes, ears and bodies in the lunchroom and on the playground. The coordinator schedules volunteers for the various lunch/recess times and shares these names with the staff on duty.

Special Needs Committee: Works with RT's special needs staff person and the school to ensure that all parents are aware of special needs accommodations available to all school children. This committee follows the local and state policies related to special needs services and communicates this information to the RT community.

Xerox Committee:  The Xerox coordinator makes sure that PTA flyers and newsletters are Xeroxed and placed in the teacher's boxes by Tuesday for "Wednesday Backpack" distribution. Working in the Xerox room requires patience since there are often many teachers and other staff members waiting to use the Xerox machine.

Blair Cluster Committee: The committee keeps the school up to date with current and proposed policies and informs the RT community of various activities that impact RT and the public school system overall. Representatives look out for RT's interests and keep watch on legislation that affects the "Blair Cluster," of which RT is a part. Information is reported back to the PTA through flyers, the listserv, PTA meetings, the RT website and RT's newsletter.

Monthly Meeting Committee: The meeting committee works with the PTA officers to plan the monthly PTA meetings, which occur on the first Tuesday of every month. Responsibilities include advertising meetings, arranging childcare, planning the meeting agendas, arranging for interpreting services, recruiting speakers, providing refreshments.
