One School, Many Cultures, One Community

Catherine Long
Ms. Catherine Long

Thank you for taking the time to explore the Ritchie Park Website!  I’d like to tell you about a few of the things that make Ritchie Park a special community of learners.  We have a talented staff leading our students through the wonders of Curriculum 2.0, based on the national Common Core Standards.  Teachers in all grades and subject areas are using an integrated approach to study topics in depth and to help students learn more about themselves as learners.  Our collaborative teams plan together to provide instruction that challenges and engages students without overwhelming them.  Our students learn about, and take responsibility for their community.   Our students take care of each other through programs such as math buddies, kindergarten helpers and announcers.  Our ambassadors visit the retirement community across the street.  Every year our families provide meals to the hungry in Montgomery County and supplies to soldiers returning home from overseas.  During the 2012-2013 school year our fifth grade students raised $3000 to provide people in Ecuador with clean drinking water.  As you can see Ritchie Park students see themselves as valued members of the RPES community and as citizens of the world!  Hopefully you will visit our school to see evidence of not only our academic and social achievements, but signs of our creativity at work as well.  Our talented students produce art work seen throughout the building and if you are lucky, you will hear our singers and musicians.  Ritchie Park is a wonderful place to learn and grow!

The entire Ritchie Park community is fortunate to have such a dedicated, highly trained staff to work daily with their hard-working students.  I am honored to have become a member of this caring community as the assistant principal. This is my 26th year with Montgomery County Public Schools and I have been teaching for 33 years. My former positions include classroom teacher (22 years), consulting teacher (3 years), staff development teacher (6 years), and instructional specialist (2 years). I look forward to spending time with collaborative teams of Ritchie Park teachers and to watching students mastering Curriculum 2.0 standards that originate from the Common Core. I look forward to seeing art, music, physical education, and media integrated in the curriculum as students blossom. Also, the generosity of the Ritchie Park community, exemplified by their visits with the elderly in the retirement community across the street and their fund raising for those in need across the world is entirely impressive. I agree with Ms. Long. Ritchie Park is a wonderful place to learn and grow!
