Tech Ed and Engineering

The Technology Education Department at Paint Branch High School provides students with the ability to approach their education in a different aspect. Our classes are problem-based teaching through projects, activities and discussions to gear more toward discovery learning. It is our mission to provide students with the skills and knowledge to make informed decisions not only in the classroom but a path toward lifelong learning.

Paint Branch High School is partnered with Project Lead The Way. Project Lead The Way is the nation's leading provider of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs. The U.S. Department of Commerce estimates that jobs in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) will grow 17 percent by 2018—nearly double the growth for non-STEM fields. By 2018, the U.S. will have more than 1.2 million unfilled STEM jobs because there will not be enough qualified workers to fill them. STEM is where jobs are today and where the job growth will be in the future. Through world-class K-12 curriculum, high-quality teacher professional development, and outstanding partnerships, PLTW is helping students develop the skills needed to succeed in the global economy.

Courses

  • Introduction to Engineering Design

    Introduction to Engineering DesignTM (IED) is a high school level course that is appropriate for 9th or 10th grade students who are interested in design and engineering. The major focus of the IED course is to expose students to design process, research and analysis, teamwork, communication methods, global and human impacts, engineering standards, and technical documentation.

  • EDD

    Engineering Design and Development (EDD) is the capstone course in the PLTW high school engineering program. It is an engineering research course in which students work in teams to design and develop an original solution to a valid open-ended technical problem by applying the engineering design process.

  • Principles of Engineering

    Principles Of Engineering (POE) is a high school-level survey course of engineering that exposes students to some of the major concepts that they will encounter in a postsecondary engineering course of study. Students have an opportunity to investigate engineering and high tech career POE gives students the opportunity to develop skills and understanding of course concepts through activity-, project-, and problem-based (APPB) learning.

  • Civil Engineering

    Civil Engineering and Architecture is the study of the design and construction of residential and commercial building projects. The course includes an introduction to many of the varied factors involved in building design and construction including building components and systems, structural design, storm water management, site design, utilities and services, cost estimation, energy efficiency, and careers in the design and construction industry.

  • Digital Electronics

    Digital Electronics TM is the study of electronic circuits that are used to process and control digital signals. In contrast to analog electronics, where information is represented by a continuously varying voltage, digital signals are represented by two discreet voltages or logic levels.

  • Technology Innovations/Computer Systems

    This course is designed a glimpse into the world of technology. Various projects will be assigned to challenge the students through critical thinking and problem solving.

  • Pre-Engineering

    This course is designed an introduction to engineering. Throughout the entirety of the class, students will be expected to identify, brainstorm, create, test, and redesign various projects.
