November 1, 2010 Update:
Maryvale Modernization and Possible Co-Location of Carl Sandburg Learning Center
A recommendation has been made to form a roundtable advisory committee charged with reviewing the possibility of co-locating the Carl Sandburg Learning Center on the Maryvale Elementary School campus. Stand-alone learning centers, such as Carl Sandburg, are no longer going to receive federal and state funding because they do not offer inclusion opportunities and, in some cases, the “least restrictive environment,” for the special education students at their schools. For that reason, MCPS will not be renovating stand-alone centers, but will instead look to co-locate them with other schools currently on the modernization list. Maryvale is being considered as a possible co-location site because it is has a large campus, is centrally located, and is on the modernization list.
The roundtable advisory committee will serve in an advisory role to the superintendent. The roundtable advisory will not make recommendations or vote on the matter. An Architect Selection Committee for hiring an architect could be as early as November/December (principal, 1 staff member and 1 parent from each school). A Public information meeting will be held in January to explain the roundtable advisory committee process and at the end of the process to present the information that was reviewed and discussed at the committee meetings.
Roundtable meetings will begin in January, 2011, and run through June, 2011, and will include approximately 5 staff members and 5 parents from each school. At the conclusion of the roundtable advisory committee process, the PTA will have the opportunity to submit a position paper (interest in our special programs, keeping project on track, etc) as part of the roundtable advisory committee process.
Parents and staff will have the opportunity to tour Longview/Matsunaga (and other schools) in winter, 2011.
Currently the plan is to move to the Northlake Holding Facility in August, 2016, and return to Maryvale in January, 2018, (funding can change this). The Northlake Holding Facility is only three miles from Maryvale. It is located on Bauer drive.
