Highland View ES-Fourth Grade Science
OOey, Gooey OObleck

by Abby, Siena, Noah
Pour one cup of cornstarch and 2 cups of glue into a large bowl; mix vigorously and voila! OObleck!
Ms. Kuhlman's fourth grade scientists were investigating this ooey, gooey mystery substance to learn more about the characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases. It was difficult to decide under which category OObleck should be placed.

| Some of the students thought the substance was a solid because it stuck together. |

| Other students thought it was more like a liquid because it couldn’t be shaped. |

No one thought it was a gas because it wouldn’t float away. But students did note, that when they rubbed OObleck with warm hands, the heat made the substance dissolve.
The scientists concluded that all forms of matter have 2 things in common. They take up space and have mass. They are still working on more investigations that focus on the changes of the state of matter.
