Reading Initiative
Garrett Park's Reading Initiative teachers meet with fewer than fifteen students for ninety minutes each day. The MCPS initiative provides a comprehensive balanced literacy program with ongoing monitoring of students' reading and writing progress in order to ensure that children will learn to read fluently and on grade level by the end of second grade. Young children are engaged in the reading/writing process beginning with basic understandings about concepts of print, letter knowledge, and phonemic awareness. The Reading Initiative Program is currently being implemented in the first and second grade.
