News and Information
Kindergarten and ASD
Kindergartners will focus on performing the steady beat to a variety of songs.
By the end of the first quarter they will have learned how to sing in a two
part round and how to perform the steady beat on hand drums. They will
begin exploration of musical opposites such as high/low and fast/slow
sounds. They will also discover the different ways to use their voices,
how to move safely to music, and how to show different patterns in music
through movement. The Students in the ASD program will focus on moving to
music and following musical cues. They will have the opportunity to show their
creativity while performing the steady beat and rhythm patterns on several
classroom instruments.
First
Grade
1st graders will also follow musical cues in songs and speech pieces. They will
have the opportunity to create and perform movements to songs as well; discover
and demonstrate how to use their bodies to show ideas in music; discuss and
create ways to show the steady beat; discuss what it means to match pitch;
identify “same” and “different” sections in music; and begin to identify
musical instruments by sight and sound.
Second
Grade
2nd grade will follow musical cues in various songs with different meters to
demonstrate understanding of the steady beat; Learn how to identify, sing, and
label the pitches mi, so & la on a five line staff; learn how to become
skilled singers; perform music that includes contrasting and repeated sections;
and perform simple rhythm patterns. They will also classify instruments into
groups which will help them prepare for their trip to the Strathmore Music
Center in the middle of November.
Third
Grade
3rd grade will use songs and speech pieces to help them determine the
difference between rhythm and the steady beat; sing a varied repertoire of
songs; learn how to identify and distinguish between verse-refrain and
cumulative songs; the music alphabet; rhythm and solfege syllables; and sing
with an expanded range of pitches. 3rd graders will also be introduced to the
melody of the month. At the end of each month 3rd graders will have to notate
the rhythm, Solfege syllables and pitch letter names of a short melody and then
perform that same melody alone and with a small group.
