Math

Our second math unit will focus on geometry. In this unit, your child will identify 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes. At home, you and your child could go on a scavenger hunt for shapes. Your can of peas is a cylinder. Your box of tissues could be a rectangular prism or perhaps a cube. Have fun looking around for all different types of shapes!

Your child will also identify the faces, edges, and vertex (vertices) of different shapes.

  • A face is a flat surface of a solid.
  • An edge is the line created where two faces of a solid meet.
  • A vertex is a point where two or more edges meet.
The students will also sort shapes by a similar attribute.
An attribute is a characteristic of a shape.

Your child could be given the following shapes.

To sort these shapes by a similar attribute, one could respond:
My rule is that the shapes have to have 3 sides. These shapes fit my rule.

Another rule could be: The shapes have no sides. This shape fits my rule.

We will identify congruent shapes. Congruent shapes are shapes that are the same size and same shape.

We will locate lines of symmetry on shapes. A shape is symmetrical if the shape can be divided in half creating mirror images.
