Grading & Reporting Updates!

Beginning this school year, final grades for students in grades 6 through 12 will be calculated using the average of the marking period grades. Teachers will no longer use grade calculation charts to determine your child’s final letter grade. Marking period grades will now be determined using percents that are reflected in the chart below.

*Semester grades will be determined by taking (MP1 Grade + MP2 Grade) and dividing by 2.

*Final or Full Year grades will be determined by taking (MP 1 Grade + MP 2 Grade + MP 3 Grade + MP 4 Grade and dividing by 4. Colleges and universities will receive an updated school profile description outlining the MCPS grading and reporting changes with each student transcript.

This shift is designed to promote greater consistency across schools and to reinforce clear expectations for student learning and accountability. In addition to the change in final grade calculation, families and students can expect:

  • Teachers will grade and return student work within 10 school days.

  • Deadlines for students to submit late work will not exceed 10 school days.

  • In all secondary courses, teachers will provide students with at least two reassessment opportunities in the All Tasks category per marking period. The following assessments may not be reassessed: end-of-course assessments, marking period assessments, required district assessments, end of semester summative assessments; final research papers, projects or essays; and culminating projects or performances.

  • Teachers shall not assign lower than 50% if the student’s work shows evidence of making progress on the relevant standards that are being assessed regardless of product or accuracy. Teachers shall continue to offer support and intervention.

We strongly encourage all parents and caregivers to sign up for ParentVUE, which provides real-time access to your child’s academic progress. Students should continue using Canvas to track assignments, grades, and teacher feedback.
