Description of Spelling Homework Activities 

List 1:

  • Write & Draw – Write the word and draw a picture to illustrate what the word means.  You must draw a picture for all of your spelling words.
  • Create a Comic Strip Using Words – Create a comic strip that has at least 6 squares.  Your comic strip needs to tell a story and include at least 8 of your spelling words.

List 2:

  • Create New Words – Write each spelling word, then rearrange the letters of the word to create as many new words as you can.  You must complete this activity for all of your spelling words.
    Example:  Teacher - her, eat, each, teach, heart, chat, chart, rat, cat, tea, hat, at, reach, act, hear, here, cheer, tear
  • Acrostic Puzzle – Write the letters of a spelling word vertically.  For each letter write a word or phrase that relates to the word.  You must complete this activity for at least 8 of your spelling words.
    Example:
    T – Teach                  T – Talented
    E – Each                    E – Energetic
    A – and Every           A – Always Smiling
    C – Child                   C – Caring
    H – Happily               H – Helpful
  • Words in Context – Write all of your spelling words in sentences that show the meaning of word.  Sentences must be at least 7 words long.  You need to write a separate sentence for each spelling word.

List 3:

  • Write Story Problems – Write math story problems that include your spelling words.  Your problems must make sense.  Solve the problems and show your work.  You need to have at least 8 different story problems.
  • Histogram Math Activity – Get the Histogram Math Activity worksheet from your class.  Follow the directions to create your histogram.  Answer the questions on the bottom of the worksheet.

 

List 4:

  • Write a Story – Write a story (that makes sense) that includes all of your spelling words.  Your story should have one topic (not be 15 different sentences that don’t go together) and have a beginning, middle, and end.
  • Write Riddles – Pick at least 8 of your spelling words and write a riddle for each word.  Each riddle should have 4 clues to help the reader identify the proper spelling word.  Write the answer to each riddle at the bottom of the clues.

  1.  It can be male or female.
  2.  It can be young or old.
  3.  It is a job.
  4. You have the best one in the whole school.

  • Handwriting – Get the handwriting paper from your class.  Write all of your spelling words three times each in your best cursive.  You can use a pen if you want.
