ONLY IN 5TH GRADE...
Gaithersburg celebrates thirteen years of involvement with the CHARACTER COUNTS! ethics program by encouraging local students to express their thoughts in words and pictures. In the past few weeks hundreds of students have been creating posters and essays around specific themes related to good character.
This year’s poster contest, “CHARACTER COUNTS! Where I Live – Making a House a Home” was open to elementary and middle schools in the Gaithersburg area that have a CHARACTER COUNTS! program. This contest is sponsored by the City of Gaithersburg and the Gazette Newspapers. Cash prizes are awarded for the top winners. Nine schools participated (8 elementary and 1 middle), we received 35 posters. Eight schools (elementary and middle) had either a winner or honorable mention. Participant certificates were distributed to 1,149 students. All posters submitted will be on display at Lakeforest Shopping Center beginning October 8. Essays will also be on display.
Elementary and middle school students participated in an essay contest entitled “Adult Heroes in Our Community.” Students wrote about someone who has had a positive, personal influence on their lives related to one or more of the Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. This contest is sponsored by the City of Gaithersburg and the Gaithersburg Rotary Club. Six elementary schools participated - 114 essays were submitted. Four schools had either a winner or honorable mention.
Two WGES were among this year's winners: Gisselle Romero and Heaven Jane Sabijon. Please click on either name to read their respective essays. Click here for more information on the City of Gaithersburg essay contest.
