MCPS students have an opportunity to participate in two literary contests:
Gaithersburg Book Festival
The Gaithersburg Book Festival is giving high school students the freedom to explore their writing creativity and enter its short story contest. There are cash prizes available for first, second, and third place winners.
Stories cannot exceed 1,000 words and must be submitted electronically via a web form by midnight Thursday, February 22, 2018. Complete rules and regulations can be found online.
Up to 12 stories will be selected as finalists and posted on the Gaithersburg Book Festival website prior to the Book Festival. The event, an annual celebration of books, writers, and literary excellence, will be held Saturday, May 19, 2018, on the grounds of Gaithersburg City Hall.
The 2018 Junior Achievement Essay Competition application officially is open. High school students have until Friday, February 23, 2018, to submit an application and a 1,000 to 1,500-word essay.
This year's topic is: "Several great entrepreneurs, including Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, dropped out of college before getting their degrees. How important do you think a college education is to your future success?"
Essays will be judged on creativity and originality; persuasiveness; grammar and spelling; understanding of subject matter; and relevance of response to topic question. The grand prize winner will receive a $20,000 award; first, second, and third place winners will receive $10,000.
