Welcome to Roscoe R. Nix Elementary School. We are looking forward to working with you and your children. My name is Annette M. Ffolkes and I have been serving as the principal of Roscoe R. Nix Elementary School since we opened in August 2006. This year we welcome back Ms. Tamar Ruth who is returning to her role as our Assistant Principal.

Our instructional focus this year is developing student discourse - providing students with strategies that they can use when speaking with their peers and adults. Maryellen Weimer, PhD in Teaching has identified five reasons why getting students to talk promotes student achievement:

1 - Students learn content when they talk about it.

2 - Talking lets students learn from each other.

3 - Talking gives students the opportunity to practice using the language of the discipline (academic language).

4 - Talking connects students with the content.

5 - Talking connects students with each other.

Student discourse is also a way for students to "rehearse" what they will be putting down on paper, so we are also seeking to promote student achievement in writing through our instructional focus.

Our teachers are working hard to ensure that your child will receive an effective instructional program, with daily opportunities for reading, writing, mathematics and student discourse. Our Superintendent, Dr. Jack Smith, has also charged each school to address two important questions: Are our children learning? & Are our children learning enough? The best way to address these questions is by continually improving teaching and learning in order to provide a strong academic program for ALL students.

Every student matters - ALL means ALL!
