NEWS
Christina Luke (center) won first place for the sixth grade short story category in the MCCIRA (Montgomery County Council of the International Reading Association) Young Authors’ Contest for her story titled “The Book of Black Magic." Ms. Koser (right), LPMS reading specialist, provided information about the contest to Mrs. Raman, the English teacher who encouraged her to participate. In the spring, the MCCIRA will sponsor a reception to honor Christina and the other Montgomery County winners. At this celebration, Christina will meet other young authors, read her short story aloud, receive a certificate, and participate in a special writing workshop presented by Gilda Joyce author, Jennifer Allison.
Craig Esherick, the former basketball coach at Georgetown, came and spoke to the boys team.

SCHOOLS FIGHT HUNGER -- Many of you may have seen the article about Lakelands receiving a national award in the Gazette. We were one of four area schools selected for National School of Distinction status from the Schools Fight Hunger program. This honor was given to fewer than 2,000 schools nationwide in the 2010-2011 school year. The Schools Fight Hunger is a two-year-old initiative focused on connecting schools with the hunger cause, helping schools fight hunger effectively, celebrating the good work of schools and students and teaching the value of service. The National School of Distinction status is awarded to schools that demonstrate notable enthusiasm, creativity or dedication in getting involved with the hunger cause. Last year Lakelands donated 457 pounds of food to help the hungry in our community! This is an award that we all share.
