CONNECT ED PHONE MESSAGES

5/20/12

Good evening. This is Mrs. Higdon with our regular Sunday Connect Ed message.

I want to congratulate our advanced band for receiving Superior ratings from all four of our adjudicators at the state festival last week. The bands, under the direction of Mr. John Lopez, also put on a wonderful concert last Thursday.

Congratulations are also being extended to our girls AND boys soccer teams. Both teams are undefeated this year! This is the fourth year in a row that the girls’ soccer team has been undefeated. Congratulations players, managers, coach Keiller and coach Tiedemann.

The Media Center is sponsoring a ”Get the books back” raffle. All library books are due in the Media Center tomorrow. When you return books, your name is added to the raffle. The prizes are iTunes and movie theater gift cards. All raffle winners will be announced on Tuesday. Don’t miss out! Please return your books tomorrow.

Wednesday all algebra students, regardless of grade, will take the algebra high school assessment, also known as the algebra HSA. Please be in school on time and ready to test on Wednesday.

Wednesday evening Northwest High School is hosting an incoming 9th grade Parent Meeting and Activity Fair. This event starts at 7:00 in their auditorium.

Thursday is our Spring Orchestra and Chorus concert. Please come out Thursday evening to support our students.  The concert begins at 7:00.

We are selling Bittner's T-shirts for $15! Sizes range from small to 2X. Come to room 150 if you would like to buy one. Proceeds go to the cholangiocarcinoma foundation. We are also still selling Bittner bracelets for a donation of $2.00

We are waiting to hear from the Board of Education about our request to name the gym the Matthew V. Bittner gymnasium. Many of you know that Mr. Bittner was really into teaching others to get healthy. In his honor, we are having our first Annual Matt Bittner Memorial walk this Friday, May 25th, during school. (This is for LPMS students only.) We chose this day because it is the Friday before Memorial Day. Please remember, Monday, May 28th, school is closed in honor of Memorial Day.

We have still have 16 days to continue to Get Smart at Lakelands Park!

This concludes the announcements. Thank you for listening.

5/13/12

Good evening. This is Mrs. Higdon with our regular Sunday Connect Ed message.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of our moms and surrogate moms. I hope you are having an enjoyable day.

The staff and I would like to thank our PTSA for the wonderful treats we received last week for Staff Appreciation Week. Every act of kindness that you show us is greatly appreciated.

I also want to give a big “Thank you” to Ms. Reed, Ms. Huff, Ms. Stamets, our volunteers, parents and students who came together to make our Kentlands Day Silent Auction a big success.

The PTSA is having back to back “Pizza Fundraisers” on Tuesday, from 5 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at Giuseppe’s in Kentlands, and Wednesday, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., at Ledo’s Pizza, in the Travilah Square Shopping Center, on Darnestown Road. Please support both events, for eat in or for carry out, and don’t forget to mention Lakelands.

Parents I need your help with a couple of issues. One is student dress, especially the girls. I have mentioned this before but it is worth saying again, we don’t like being the fashion police. We never want to make a student feel uncomfortable. However tank tops, see-thru blouses, short shorts and clothes that expose the midriff, are inappropriate for school. Please check your daughter’s clothing before they leave home. If you think it may be inappropriate, then it probably is.

We are also receiving lots of complaints about postings on Facebook. We have limited authority when it pertains to incidents that happen at home including comments written on Twitter, Facebook, or any other social network. If you are allowing your child to have these accounts, please monitor them closely to make sure what they post is acceptable.

This is also the time of year when many parents notify us about their vacation plans. For those traveling out of the country, regardless of the reason, including declining health of a loved one, please note that we cannot give secure exams early, nor can we give weeks of work to be sent away with your child and returned later for a grade.

We know that family time is important to you. We will work with you to give exams, during the summer or in August, when your child returns. If your child is taking high school credit courses, PLEASE be aware that the credit will not be issued until the exam is taken.

Thank you for your support with monitoring clothing, Facebook and Twitter and maintaining high attendance as the school year comes to a close.

This concludes the announcements. Thanks for listening.

This is Mrs. Higdon with one more announcement:

I forgot to mention our Spring Band Concert is this Thursday, at 7:00. Please come out and support our students under the direction of our award winning teacher, Mr. John Lopez. Our students have been practicing and giving it their all. You are in for an enjoyable experience Thursday, at 7:00.

Please see Mrs. Filano if you are interested in applying to The Young Science Explorer's Program. Applications are due on May 15th. The program is a one week camp, hosted by Montgomery College and MedImmune, that explores laboratory techniques and potential Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics based careers. This year’s event will be held at Montgomery College, Germantown during the week of July 30th. The camp is open to all students entering the 7th or 8th grade next school year.

This concludes the announcements. Thank you for listening.

This concludes the announcements. Thank you for listening.

I’d also like to take the opportunity to share that 32 Lakelands Park art students are participating in the MCPS Art Fair this week. The exhibit will be open for viewing from 10 am to 9 pm Thursday through Saturday, and on Sunday from noon until 5 pm at White Flint Mall. 4/15/12

Good evening. This is Mrs. Higdon with our regular Sunday Connect Ed message.

Last Sunday I sent you a survey asking for you to vote “Yes” or “No” to naming the gymnasium after our former teacher, Mr. Bittner. Ninety-six percent of the parents who responded voted “Yes”. The percentages were even higher for staff and students. As a result, we will send our request to the Office of School Performance.

I also want to take a moment to congratulate Megalo Tso. Megalo is one of our 6th graders who took first place in the Aspiring Cello category at a recent contest sponsored by the Washington Performing Arts Society. Congratulations Megalo.

Tomorrow our superintendent, Dr. Starr, will sponsor another Spring Forum, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM, at Seneca Valley High School. The topic will be the MCPS special education programs. This forum is open to all staff and parents.

On Tuesday the Prichard Festival Productions is hosting the world-renowned Canadian Brass musical group, at QOHS auditorium, at 7:30 pm. The cost is $40.00 per ticket. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Lakelands' music department.

Also on Tuesday night Kingsview Middle School’s PTSA has invited us to join them for a middle school Drug and Alcohol Awareness symposium, hosted by the Montgomery County Fifth District Police. The meeting will be in the media center at 7:30 pm.

The 4th Annual Kentlands Day is fast approaching. The date is Saturday, May 5th. We need your help. We need parents to help with the parade, direct cars and help with the carnival and stage. If interested, please sign up online by visiting
www.kentlandsday.com and register directly through Volunteerspot or by contacting Mrs. Huff in the main office.

Last week the PTSA approved the slate of officers for next year, as presented by the Nominating Committee. Voting will take place on Tuesday, May 8, at 7 pm, at the PTSA Members Meeting. 4/13/12

Dear Parents,

I want to share information about an incident that affected our school and how it was handled by staff.

Today a student brought a pocketknife to school. Fortunately this was brought to the attention of administration and the knife was confiscated immediately. There was no interruption to our school day as a result of this incident.

I am requesting that you take a moment with your children to reinforce the seriousness of bringing weapons to school. Weapons, or weapon-like objects, of any kind may not be brought to school. Students are subject to disciplinary action in such cases.

We want to assure you that your child’s safety and security are our top priority.

If you have any questions, please contact me or any member of the administrative team at Lakelands Park Middle School. Thank you for your continued support of our efforts to maintain a safe and orderly environment for our children.

Sincerely,

Deborah R. Higdon
Principal, Lakelands Park Middle School

4/10/12

Our PTSA meeting previously scheduled for tonight has been postponed until tomorrow, Wednesday, at 7:00, in the Falcon's Nest.

Thursday, April 12th is Group and Club Picture Day. We will NOT have Spring Picture Day until Friday, April 27th.

Also this Thursday is the last day for 8th graders to turn in their student service learning hours in order to qualify for the Superintendent's Service Awards for 2012. Please contact Ms. Luensman, in the counseling office, if you have questions about this award.

4/8/12

Good evening. This is Mrs. Higdon with our regular Sunday Connect Ed message.

I hope you are enjoying our spring break. Believe it or not, we are in the last quarter of this school year. So students enjoy being off tomorrow. Please come back ready and energized for the fourth quarter.

Speaking of energized, I received news that our own Adam Rusak, won first place, for the state in the Geography Bee. Congratulations Adam and your sponsors Mrs. Raman and Ms. Bourdett. We are proud of all of you!

Now for the week: Wednesday Blanton Studios will be here to take group and club pictures. Blanton will return on Thursday for Spring Pictures. All students will have their picture taken.

Thursday is also report card distribution day. If you do not receive a report card for your child, please contact the counseling office. We do not hold report cards for any reason.

Spring is here and so are the shorts! Parents we don't want to be the fashion police. Please make sure your child's clothing is appropriate for school and that it does not draw negative attention to them or distract from teaching and learning. If you think something may be too short or too low, then it probably is. Thank you for working with us on this.

As you know we suffered a great loss when our teacher, Mr. Matthew Bittner, passed away, earlier in the school year. Many of you asked about naming the gymnasium in his honor. The administration and I are drafting a letter, along with staff and student petitions, that we are sending to the Board of Education, requesting the right to name Lakelands' gym, the Matthew Bittner Gymnasium. Students will have an opportunity to sign petitions this week at school. Parent input is also needed. In a few minutes, you will receive a second call from me asking you to participate in a survey about naming the gym. I will share the results of the survey during next Sunday's Connect Ed call out.

This concludes the announcements. Thank you for listening.

3/25/12

Good evening. This is Mrs. Higdon with our regular Sunday Connect Ed message.

We are almost finished with MSAs. Tomorrow and Tuesday are the last two make-up tests days.

Tennis intramurals start this Tuesday. You must sign up in the cafeteria in order to attend. If you want to learn how to play tennis or you want to practice your tennis skills, this activity is for you! Bring your own equipment or use the schools. Meet Ms. Flynn in the cafeteria after school Tuesday or see her in Room 356 if you have questions.

This Thursday marks the end of the third quarter. All assignments need to be completed and turned in this Thursday.

Teachers will be completing grades on Friday which is why there is no school for students this Friday.

We start our spring break on Monday, April 2nd. School reopens on Tuesday, April 10th. Due to spring break, we will not have a Sunday Connect Ed message next Sunday.

Save the date! The Pritchard Music Academy has arranged for the renowned Canadian Brass to perform at Quince Orchard High School on Tuesday, April 17, at 7:30 pm. They are donating a portion of the proceeds to the Lakelands’ music program. Please come out to enjoy an evening of truly fine entertainment and help Lakelands music department at the same time. Tickets are limited and available only online. The online address will be posted on our website tomorrow.

This concludes the announcements. Thank you for listening.

3/18/12

Good evening. This is Mrs. Higdon with our regular Sunday Connect Ed message.

The staff and I always appreciate the generosity of our PTSA. The PTSA Staff Appreciation Lunch this month was wonderful. Thank you everyone who contributed to it.

We are still taking our MSA tests. On Monday, 6th graders will take their second math test, 7 and 8 graders will take their math test on Tuesday and Wednesday. We will continue make-up testing until the 27th.

Dr. Starr’s next Spring Forum, which will take place on Thursday, at Magruder High School, will cover the topic of gifted education. Highlights from the first forum as well as additional information on upcoming forums, will be posted on the MCPS Superintendent’s Spring Forum website.

Tennis intramurals will begin on Tuesday, March 29th. You must sign up in the cafeteria in order to attend. This activity is for you if you want to learn how to play tennis or you want to practice your tennis skills. You may bring your own equipment or use the schools. Please contact Ms. Flynn in Room 356 if you have questions.

Attention all 8th grade students, the end of the year events are rapidly approaching! Don’t forget to get your permission slips and payment in for the dance or Six Flags to either Mrs. Sheron or Mrs. Gowetski by April 27th! Extra permission slips can be found in the main office or on the school website.

This week is the beginning of spring. The weather has already gotten warmer. Parents I need your help. PLEASE check your child’s clothing before they leave home. Many girls are wearing very, short shorts. We know this is the current style. However, we don’t want to hurt anyone’s feeling. But some shorts are too short for school. They cause a distraction from teaching and learning. Please work with us on this and check their clothing, from the front and the back, before they leave home. If they have to constantly pull them down to be appropriate, then they are inappropriate for school.

This concludes the announcements. Thank you for listening.

3/11/12

Good evening. This is Mrs. Higdon with our regular Sunday Connect Ed message.

I want to thank the PTSA, students and staff who participated in the PTSA Basketball Night this past Friday. It was a great success.

I hope by now you have moved your clock forward for daylight savings time.

I would like to remind all students and parents that MSA testing begins this week. Sixth graders will take their reading tests on Monday and Tuesday; Seventh and eighth graders take their reading tests on Wednesday and Thursday. Sixth graders take their first math test on Friday. The complete testing schedule will be posted on our website this Monday. Students were given individual testing calendars to take home last Thursday. The MSA schedule is on blue paper.

In preparation for the tests, the evening before, please make any special arrangements about lunch or after school instruction, so the school day is not interrupted. Students should get at least eight hours of sleep the night before each test. They should also eat a good breakfast. All students need to be in school, no later than 7:50, to make it to their testing room on time.

Parents please encourage your child to do their best. These tests are considered, along with other data, when making decisions about classes for the next year.

Attention all 8th grade parents! Our end of the year events for 6 Flags and the 8th Grade Dance are rapidly approaching! Permission slips and payment are due to either Mrs. Gowetski or Mrs. Sheron by April 27th. Extra permission slips can be found in the main office or on the LPMS website. If you have any questions about the events please feel free to contact either Mrs. Gowetski or Mrs. Sheron.

Superintendent Joshua Starr’s first spring forum—devoted to the topic of English Language learners—will be held on Monday, March 12, at Kennedy High School. Additional information about the forums is included in the Connect Ed email. I will announce the other three dates and topics the Sunday before they are scheduled to occur.

The second forum, on gifted education, is scheduled for March 22 at Magruder High School. Dr. Starr is holding four forums this spring.  These forums will provide parents, staff and students an opportunity to hear about the latest trends and research, find out what’s happening in our schools, and share their thoughts with other participants. The format of each meeting will be similar and will include a brief panel presentation followed by small-group discussions. All forums will be held from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., and childcare and interpretation services will be provided. The remaining two forums will be held on April 16th, at Seneca Valley High School and will focus on special education and the last forum will be at Walt Whitman High School on May 10th and it will focus on social and emotional learning.  Additional information is available at www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org.

This concludes the announcements. Thank you for listening.

Good evening. This is Mrs. Higdon with our regular Sunday Connect Ed message.

I want to thank every staff member and all students for a successful MSA pep rally on Friday. There are several people who put in extra time and effort to make the assembly a success. They are: Ms. Reed, Mr. Beidleman, Mrs. Riolo, Mrs. Textoris, Mrs. Filano, Mr. Lopez, Ms. Bowden and Mrs. Tsai. I also want to recognize a former student, Noah Pearlstein for preparing and providing the music for our talent show and our pep rally. Last but not least, I want to thank our PTSA president, Mrs. Skimmons, and the chairperson of the PTSA fundraising committee, Mrs. Vargas, for recognizing our Box Top Contest winners: Sophia Smondrowski, Julia Vargas and Adam Knapton.

Speaking of the PTSA, they are still conducting their direct appeal campaign. A flyer was sent home last Thursday. Please make checks out to Lakelands PTSA and remember no amount is too small.

Lakelands is extending congratulations to Adam Rusak, an 8th grader who has qualified to represent us at the state level of the National Geographic Bee competition on March 30th in Baltimore. Good luck Adam!

I want to start by congratulating Coach James Reed and our boys basketball team and managers for an undefeated season. This was not easy. We recognize the amount of dedication and team work that was necessary to have a successful season. Congratulations Coach Reed and our boys basketball team!

Parents we need your help. Many people are letting children out of cars on the street behind the school, near the bus loop or on Main Street. This is a dangerous practice. We don't want any student to get injured. Please drop students off in front of the school. It will take a few more minutes but I believe the safety of our children is worth it.

This is a reminder that school is closed tomorrow in honor of President’s Day.

The PTSA Coffee House Variety show is this Thursday evening. The final rehearsal will be after school on Wednesday. All performers must come prepared to perform their entire act. Also, all students must have a current health form on file, in the health room, in order to try out. I repeat, all students must have a current health form, on file in the health room, in order to try out.

This concludes the announcements.  Thank you for listening.

2/3/12

Dear Parents,
MSA testing is right around the corner in March! State testing can be a stressful time for both students and staff. In order to make the stress of testing a little easier, we are going to be implementing grade level raffle prizes each day of MSA during lunch. Students who are present for testing, stay on task, do their best, and complete their test will receive a raffle ticket. We are then going to be raffling off a variety of prizes for students during their grade level lunch periods each day.

We are currently in the process of collecting prizes for the raffle and we need your help! We are looking for donations for our raffle prizes. The prizes can be anything that a middle school child would enjoy, from a bag of candy to an itunes gift card to movie tickets! If you are interested in donating a raffle prize please contact your child’s grade level team leader in order to let them know what you would like to donate and when you can bring it in. We need all donations by March 1st.

1/29/12

Good evening. This is Mrs. Higdon with our regular Sunday Connect Ed message.

Registration forms for the PTSA Variety Show are in the office.  Each participant in an act needs their parent’s signature of approval.  Don’t forget to sign up during lunch tomorrow. All acts should plan to do a preview on Thursday afterschool.  If you will be using music please bring a CD of your music with you.

Grade level Team Leaders:
6th: Karen Boyd, Katie Filano
7th: Charlie Wang, Stefanie Draisen
8th: Stephanie Sheron, Kelly Gowetski
