RCMS Morning Announcements

Thursday, January 18, 2018:

EDP classes will not meet for the next two weeks.  Classes will resume when EBB resumes.  If you are enrolled in an EDP course, please note that classes will resume the week of January 29th.  Please see Mrs. Murray if you have any questions.

NO ACTIVITY BUSES for the Next 2 weeks – Once EBB ends this Thursday, there will be NO activity bus for the following 2 weeks. If you are in a school club, and normal ride the activity bus, you will need to make other arrangements to get home after the club ends.  Activity buses will resume again when EBB on Monday, Feb. 5th.

Manna Food Drive - The Manna Food Drive is starting January 16th and going on till the 26th.  Bring your dry or canned foods to the Manna Food Drive table in your grade hallway. Make sure you credit your World Studies or Society Studies class with the SGA rep. The class with the most donations in each grade- 6th-7th, and 8th-- will get a pizza party.  Hunger is a year round issue and donating even one can will make a difference. Make sure to donate if you can.

Melting Ice Specialist - Are you thinking about a career in science? Do you wonder exactly how scientists do their field work? Are you interested in learning more about climate change? If yes, then you want to come to a special presentation about Sea Ice Melt in the Arctic by Dr. Linette Boisvert, a research scientist and former MCPS student! It will be on Thursday, January 18 at 6 p.m. in the Media Center. It will include a video presentation, a demo, and a study activity. Students and parents are welcome to come.

Winter Chess at RCMS— Registration is still OPEN! Chess club has just begun but it’s not too late to register.  The club meets every Friday from 3:15pm-4:15pm. Chess Tournament Training is also available and meets every Friday from 4:15pm-5:30pm. Sign up for one—or both! The Chess club will be a mixture of lessons, activities, and games. New to chess or advanced?   No worries! Tournament Training is another great choice.  Participants play rated games each week, with our highly rated chess coaches analyzing students’ games. This is a great way for students to increase their skill and will make the team more competitive for the upcoming State Championships! Registration for both is available here.  Requests for financial aid can also be made via the registration link, so don't let that stop you.

Sign up to showcase a country at the Black History Month Event and earn SSL Hours! - Sign up for a table to showcase your family’s background or a country of interest. You can display posters, crafts, flags, photos or any other artifacts from your selected country. See Ms. Monte in the Counselling office for information on how to participate.

RCMS Black History Month Art Contest - Enter to win a $100 Amazon gift card! - Create an original art piece inspired by this year's Black History Month theme: Celebrating Diversity using any form of media. Submit your art piece and an artist statement (a brief description of your work and how it relates to the theme) to Ms. Kyeremeh in Room 240 by Monday Feb 12th. Artwork will be on display at school during the week of Feb 12th and exhibited at the Black History Month Celebration where winners will be announced. Prizes include a $100 Amazon gift card plus more!

Mark Your Calendar - This year’s RCMS Black History Month Celebration will be held on Friday Feb 16th 6 - 8:30pm at the school. The event will include Culture & Heritage displays, an art exhibit, student & staff talent showcase, and guest performances from the community. Save the date and don't miss this event!

Don't miss this event!

Sign up to showcase a Country at the Black History Month Event - Is your family from the Caribbean, South or Central America, Africa, Asia, Europe, Canada or the US and has African ancestry? Or do you have an interest in a country with African heritage? Come showcase your family's background or country of interest at the Black History Month Culture & Heritage Showcase.  Sign up for a table to display  posters, crafts, flags, currency, clothing, photos, artwork or any other artifacts from your selected country. You can even bring some food samples to share. Let's showcase the diversity of the RCMS community! Participating students can earn SSL hours. Sign up online for a table.

SPIRIT WEEK HAS COME TO AN END! Today is Twin day – Did you and a friend dress alike today?  Hope you had a fun week and enjoyed showing your creativity.  Thanks to everyone that participated in the fun days!

ROCK BAND AUDITIONS - Attention students interested in signing up for Rock Band next year. If you are NOT already a student of Ms. Levy's but play piano, guitar, bass, or drums, Rock Band is for you!  All you need to do is sign up for a simple, low-stress audition. Auditions will be held this week during lunch. You simply need to bring a song, or some beats to play.  You can sign up for an audition time outside the Rock Band room, Room 242.  Don't miss out on this awesome opportunity! You can take Rock Band at school for free!  This class is open to all students, both Local and Center

Got Talent? - Black History Month Talent Showcase Auditions next Friday Jan 12th - Got Talent? Calling all student musicians, dancers, rappers, comedians, poets, singers….We are looking for a variety of student talent (individuals and groups) to participate in this year's Black History Month Talent Showcase. Our theme is ‘Celebrating Diversity’! Sign up with Ms. Monte in the Counselling office and come out and audition on Friday Jan 12, 3:05 - 4:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Students must organize their own transportation home. Participating students can earn SSL hours!
