♫General/Vocal Music at Burning Tree ♫ 

 

  • All students come to music once a week for 40-50 minutes with their homeroom classes. 

   

  • Weekly music classes provide students opportunities to sing, dance, read and write music, and play classroom percussion instruments (i.e. xylophones, glockenspiels, hand drums, maracas, jingle bells, tambourines, wood blocks, claves, triangles, etc.). 

   

  • Students will be assessed in three musical categories, appropriate to their grade level.  All assessments are based on the National Standards for Music Education: 
  • Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
  • Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
  • Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments.
  • Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines.
  • Reading and notating music.
  • Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.
  • Evaluating music and music performances.
  • Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.
  • Understanding music in relation to history and culture.

Additionally, students in Grades 1, 2, and 3 will be graded according to the 

  MCPS Standards-Based Grading and Reporting assessments (see details on reverse). 

   

 

  • Fourth and fifth grade students have the opportunity to study on an instrument of their choice.  For information regarding instrumental music, please contact Mr. John Hart. (john_h_hart@mcpsmd.org). 

 

  • All students in Grade 4 participate in chorus, which meets for 50 minutes every Thursday morning. 

   

  • A Show Choir will meet on Tuesday mornings before school (8:15 – 9:05).  This chorus will be open to all interested fifth grade students.
