Smart Growth Project
Directions: Using Smart Growth principles, create a new
development that includes all of the necessities while remaining
environmentally friendly. Be creative –
consider your ideal neighborhood. You
may work either by yourself or with someone else.
Your community must include
the following:
You have two choices for how
to create your project: two-dimensional
(flat) or three-dimensional. If you
choose the 2-D project, you may work alone or with one other partner. If you choose the 3-D project, you may work
alone or with one or two other partners.

You will create your project
on a piece of unlined paper, approximately the size of two pieces of printer
paper, taped together. Draw the town
from the bird’s eye view – as if you were in a helicopter, looking down on
the town. You must draw streets,
parks, houses, etc. You may want to
use different colors for different types of buildings, or use different
designs and textures. You will have two class days
to work on this – the first day will be largely planning time, and the second
day will be drawing time. I suggest dividing
the tasks or getting together outside of class to work with your partner. On the day the projects are
due, we will have a gallery walk so that everyone can see your town. |
You will create your project
on a piece of cardboard approximately 18X24 inches. You may draw the streets,
parks, houses, etc., but the project should be three-dimensional. Check dollar stores or your little sister’s
toy box for little houses, trees, train tracks, cars, people, etc. You can also build things out of Legos, popsicle
sticks, sugar cubes, cardboard, paper, etc.
