MCPS High School Programs


Thomas Edison High School of Technology

Rising Grade 11 (current Grade 10) students can take advantage of available career programs by applying to Thomas Edison High School of Technology to attend on a part-time basis for Grades 11-12. Students remain enrolled in their home school for core coursework and attend the program at Thomas Edison for a portion of the day. Once enrolled, students are expected to complete the full program of study. Transportation is provided daily from the student’s home school.

Countywide programs (see below) are available to students from all 25 high schools. Regional programs are available at central sites based on the student’s home high school. Students from the following clusters must complete an interest application* to be considered: Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Winston Churchill, Walter Johnson, Richard Montgomery, Rockville, Sherwood, Walt Whitman, Thomas S. Wootton, Northeast Consortium (NEC) – Paint Branch, Springbrook, Blake, and Downcounty Consortium (DCC) – Blair, Einstein, Northwood, Kennedy and Wheaton.

Seneca Valley High School

Rising Grade 11 (current Grade 10) students can take advantage of available career programs by applying to Seneca Valley High School to attend specialized programs of study on a part-time basis in Grades 11-12. Students remain enrolled in their home school for core coursework and attend the program at Seneca Valley for a portion of the day. Once enrolled, students are expected to complete the full program of study. Transportation is provided daily from the student’s home school. Regional programs are available at central sites based on the student’s home high school. Students from the following clusters must complete an interest application* to be considered: Clarksburg, Damascus, Gaithersburg, Magruder, Northwest, Poolesville, Quince Orchard, Seneca Valley and Watkins Mill.

Gaithersburg High School also provides additional options for students to attend specialized programs of study while remaining enrolled in a neighboring high school. Regional programs are available at central sites based on the student’s home high school. Students from the following clusters must complete an interest application* to be considered: Clarksburg, Damascus, Gaithersburg, Magruder, Northwest, Poolesville, Quince Orchard, Seneca Valley and Watkins Mill.

Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp
Col. Zadok Magruder High School

Rising Grades 9,10 and 11 students can take advantage of the Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp (JROTC) program by applying to Magruder High School to attend on a part-time basis in Grades 10-12. Students will be able to attend the Army JROTC program of study at Magruder while remaining enrolled in a neighboring high school. Regional programs are available at central sites based on the student’s home high school. Students from the following clusters must complete an interest application* to be considered: Clarksburg, Damascus, Gaithersburg, Magruder, Northwest, Poolesville, Quince Orchard, Seneca Valley and Watkins Mill.


Visual Art Center (VAC)
Albert Einstein High School

The Visual Art Center (VAC) offers students a broad perspective of fine arts and deepens their understanding of the opportunities for art-related careers through exposure to art history, contemporary artists and artwork. This rigorous and comprehensive program—directed toward portfolio development—enables students to realize and achieve their full potential in visual art. Most graduating students study fine arts or commercial art at a higher level. Admission to the program is through a portfolio review and open to residents of Montgomery County in Grades 8-11.


Fire Science and Rescue

(Students from all High Schools are Eligible to Apply)

Students prepare for careers in fire, rescue, emergency management and public safety by studying fire science prevention and control and emergency medical technology. Students are eligible to earn industry certification and/or college credit during their course of study. Acceptance and enrollment is on the condition that the student is eligible for the program. Transportation is available to students in the Clarksburg, Damascus, Gaithersburg, Magruder, Northwest, Rockville, Seneca Valley and Watkins Mill clusters. More information can be found here.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Grade 12

Students explore careers in emergency medical services while earning certification in Emergency Medical Technician (Basic). Formal, hands-on training will be provided by the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI) of the University of Maryland and will take place at the Montgomery County Public Safety Training Academy. This program is available to students from all 25 high schools.


Montgomery College
Early College Program

(Students from all High Schools are Eligible to Apply)

MCPS and Montgomery College have expanded access to the Early College program for rising Grade 11 students. The Early College program is offered at all three campuses of Montgomery College, and provides MCPS-enrolled students the opportunity to earn an associate degree in a specific content area, while simultaneously completing Grades 11 and 12 as a full-time college student. Students complete all high school graduation requirements through dual-credit coursework on campus at Montgomery College. Interested Grade 10 students should complete the interest form* to be considered. Those who are eligible will receive a separate communication with application information. *Applications will continue to be accepted on a rolling basis until programs are filled. When applications exceed the number of available seats, a lottery will be conducted.
