Participate in an MCPS Virtual Learning Academy

Interest Survey

April 23, 2021

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is planning to offer a virtual academy for students in grades PreK-12 for the 2021-2022 school year in addition to a traditional in-person, five-day-a-week learning option. Your responses to this interest survey will help MCPS in planning for virtual learning, currently being called a virtual academy. This is not a commitment to attend the virtual academy and does not guarantee admission, it is intended to gauge family interest. More information on how to apply for the virtual academy will be shared with the community soon.

While virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic has been difficult for many students, others have thrived. The flexibility to work online from home has provided opportunities that support many family needs and the social-emotional needs of some students. For these reasons and more, MCPS is planning to improve online learning options.

Important details:

  1. Students who attend the virtual academy will remain enrolled in their home school. They will access all services (other than select virtual courses) through the home school including meal services, special education services, and counseling services.

  2. Students will be able to participate in extracurricular activities at their home school (clubs, after-school activities, and interscholastic athletics at middle and high schools).

  3. Students who attend the full-time/full-year virtual program will be taught by teachers assigned to the virtual academy, not by teachers in the students’ home school.

  4. The virtual academy is being designed as a full-time only, full-year option for Pre-K-12 students. MCPS may consider a part-time option for high school students.
