Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff and Students,

On Tuesday, May 12, 2020, the Board of Education will discuss and take action on a grading and reporting plan for secondary students. The plan will address the calculation of the overall semester grade, Grade Point Average (GPA), and how final grades will be reported on transcripts. The meeting, which will begin at 11 a.m., will be broadcast live on the MCPS website and on MCPS-TV. Please tune in for this important discussion. We also will provide an update to the community once the Board takes final action.

Over the past several weeks, MCPS has explored several grading and reporting options for the second semester. Staff will present several concepts and ideas to the Board that were developed in collaboration with various stakeholder groups and after careful review of feedback from staff, parents and students.

The Board will discuss a number of concepts, including:

  • A universal Pass/Incomplete as a final semester grade for all students
  • Students receive a final letter grade that is the same as their 3rd Marking Period grade
  • Students receive a final letter grade that is one letter grade higher than their 3rd Marking Period grade
  • Students have the option of receiving a final letter grade or a Pass/Incomplete

Please watch this short video to learn more about the concepts that the
Board will discuss on May 12. You can also visit the Continuity of Learning webpage.
