Chinese Immersion Program - Middle School Level

Program Description

Students may continue the Chinese immersion experience at Hoover Middle School's Chinese Immersion Program. Students coming from elementary Chinese immersion programs will continue in a one-period language course before transitioning to the regular MCPS Chinese 2 course in Grade 7.

The main difference between an immersion setting and a foreign language class is the approach to second language learning. In an immersion program, language is a method for teaching the content rather than the subject of instruction.

Partial immersion programs are based on this principle with a portion of the curriculum taught in the second language. Admission

Potomac and Bayard Rustin Elementary Immersion students interested in continuing the immersion program in middle school feed into Herbert Hoover Middle School. Admission to the Foreign Language Immersion Program is for incoming Grade 6 students who complete the corresponding immersion program at the elementary level.

Students who did not participate in the elementary program may test into an immersion program if there is space available.

Grade 5 students interested in continuing the immersion program must complete a Notice of Intent form for the following school year.

Transportation

Transportation is not provided for language immersion students who live outside the local Hoover boundary.
