Mr. Wyman O. Jones

Band and Orchestra Director

 

Mr. Jones is in his twenty-fifth year teaching instrumental music and his eleventh year at Springbrook High School. He previously taught in the District of Columbia Public Schools, including seven years at the world-renowned Duke Ellington School for the Performing Arts. Since coming to Springbrook, Mr. Jones has established a number of programs. The Summer Jazz Institute and Music Workshop, Swing into Spring Annual Benefit Dinner Dance, the Springbrook String Quartet, Jazz Combo, Jazz Band, Marching Band, Symphonic Band, String Orchestra, Pep Band, Symphonic Orchestra and in the fall of 1999, the Springbrook Music Boosters was formed and organized. Under his leadership, the music department earned Grammy recognition in 2008 and was awarded the Grammy Signature Schools Gibson Award. The Grammy Foundation recognizes outstanding U.S. Public High School music programs. The music department received a $5,000.00 grant for the purchase of new instruments and music related equipment from the Grammy Foundation.

Over the years, the Instrumental Music program has competed in national music festivals in a number of cities across the United States and Canada. It has earned superior and outstanding ratings in all. These festival locations in include; Atlanta, Georgia, Boston Massachusetts, Chicago, Illinois, Anaheim, California, Memphis, Tennessee, Williamsburg, Virginia and Toronto, Canada.

In May of 2008, Mr. Jones established the first ever Senor Instrumental Music Scholarship Fund at Springbrook. At the end of each school year, the Senior Instrumental Music Scholarship Fund award senior band nd orchestra members with a cash scholarship for outstanding service, performance and commitment to the Springbrook Instrumental Music Program. In order to be eligible for the scholarship, band and orchestra members must demonstrate outstanding service and complete 4 consecutive years in the instrumental music program. Since the inception of the Scholarship Fund in 2008, the Springbrook Instrumental Music program has awarded over $5,000 to deserving band and orchestra members and has pledge to increase the fund for the upcoming school year.

Middle School Band and Orchestra Night is another program developed by Mr. Jones while at Springbrook. This program is designed to provide middle school instrumental music students an opportunity to participate in the Springbrook band or orchestra program and receive instrumental music lessons from the Springbrook band and orchestra members. The middle school students also get an opportunity to perform with the Marching Band at a home football game.

Even though resources are limited, Mr. Jones along with many parent volunteers have successfully written and received funding from several grants for the Springbrook music program. The funding from these grants made it possible to purchase new instruments, repairs existing instruments, purchase music, uniforms and equipment. The music program has received grant funding from the following organizations; Challenge for the Children Foundation, Mr. Holland Opus Foundation, Washington Post Music and Arts Grant and Donors Choose Foundation.
