Study Hints for Students

  • Determine the time of day/evening when YOU are the most energetic and productive.
  • Study at the same time and place each day.
  • Work in the kitchen or dining room. Do not work in your bedroom where you will be distracted.
  • Unplug the phone and turn off television or music. If working on the computer, turn off ‘"Instant Message."
  • Have all necessary materials with you prior to starting your studying.
  • Spend a minimum of TWO HOURS studying or completing homework each day. If you finish the assigned work in less than two hours, use the remaining time to review or work ahead.
    • Look at your monthly calendar and enter any upcoming tests, quizzes, or projects.
    • Organize your notebook, and punch holes in any handouts before filing.
    • Record points for any returned assignments on a grade sheet kept in the front of each notebook section.
    • Review class notes and upcoming reading daily.
     
  • Use a clock to judge time, planning for short study breaks if needed.

What Parents Can Do to Help Students Establish Good Study Habits

Homework is critical for success in high school. Here are some suggested strategies for improving study habits:

  • Determine the best time and location for studying- Not the bedroom.
  • Turn off the radio, television ,and any other distractions.
  • Unplug the phone.
  • Allow computer use only if it is required for the assignment.
  • Turn off “instant messaging” on the computer.
  • Provide all necessary tools, such as pencils, pen, and paper.
  • Check the assignment book every night.
  • Sign off on completed homework in the assignment book.
  • Review weekly and monthly calendars.
  • Help organize notebooks for finding information easily.
  • Enforce the agreed upon time to devote to study.
  • Monitor your student to ensure studying is being done.

Other Ways Parents Can Help

  • Contact teachers each semester via email.
  • Check with departments for regularly scheduled help sessions.
  • Keep important dates (progress reports, interims, report cards) and phone numbers (Main Office, Attendance Office, and Guidance Office) posted on you refrigerator.
  • Visit the Guidance office to look through files of professional tutors.
  • Keep involved in your student’s school life.
