WJ Administrator Biographies
VERNITTA B. TUCKER
Ms. Vernitta B. Tucker is a native of Orangeburg, South Carolina. She attended South Carolina State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in English with a concentration in middle and secondary English.
She taught English for two years in the Ninth Grade Academy at Lake Marion High School in Orangeburg School District 3. Ms. Tucker was also the 9th grade team leader for English content and Editor-in-Chief of The Gator Bite,
the school’s newspaper.
Ms. Tucker relocated to Maryland in 2006 and obtained a Master of Arts in English Language and Literature at Morgan State University. While pursuing her degree, she taught English 9, English 12, and Advanced Placement
Literature and Composition at Gaithersburg High School for six years. During her tenure, she conducted writing workshops as targeted intervention for students of AP Literature, tutored for the SAT, and taught High School Plus. Promoting
creative writers has been a personal passion, so she also supported the efforts of a Creative Writer’s Club at GHS.
In 2013, she became Resource Teacher for English at Quince Orchard High School and managed a department of sixteen teachers. As department head, she helped fortify instructional foci and established a model for analytical writing
instruction that resulted in school-wide reform.
Ms. Tucker enjoys reading poetry and writing short fiction. She is thrilled to be an administrator at Walter John High School and looks forward to working with its students, staff, and community.
