My name is Traci Matturro and I am the reading specialist here at Wheaton Woods. I have been in Montgomery County for over 30 years as both a classroom teacher and reading specialist.
My job is to oversee the literacy program
at our school. I work primarily with
teachers to support their practice in both reading and writing.
As the school year gets underway there
are many things you can do to support your child at home. One of the best ways is to read to your child
no matter how old they are! Kids love
listening to stories and when the story comes from a parent or guardian it is
so much sweeter. If your first language
is not English, read to your child in YOUR language.
Your child should be bringing home books
every night and it is critical that you are ensuring your child is reading,
even if it is for 15-20 minutes. We need
kids to build stamina so that they can read for sustained periods of time. Consider setting a timer for 5 minutes at
first. Then begin to increase it over
time. Your child should be reading books
s/he loves as well as those instructed by his/her teacher.
If you have any questions, feel free to
email me at firstname.lastname@example.org as I
am here to serve you and our kids.
