African American Heritage/Black History Month (Serino):  Blake HS in Silver Spring is named for Baltimore native and  native renowned musician James Hubert “Eubie” Blake. He collaborated to write “Shuffle Along,” one of the first Broadway musicals written and directed by African Americans.

Good Morning Wildcats! Starting today, Westland students will teach you how to say “Good Morning” in their first language.

Blind Date with a Book (Salnick): It’s that time of year!  Swing by the media center all week to meet your blind date (don’t worry--it’s really just a wrapped book), fill out the “Rate your Date” card, and be entered into a raffle to win a prize!  100 percent guaranteed to be less awkward than a real date!


Spanish for Spanish Speakers (Lepard): 8th graders who speak Spanish may be interested in taking Spanish for Spanish Speakers at BCC next year. Please see Ms. Lepard in room 210 to sign up to take the  Placement test. The test will be given in school TOMORROW - see Ms. Lepard today if you want to test and have not already signed up.

Soccer TryOuts (Clise) - Tryouts begin on Tuesday, March 5th and run through Thursday, March 7th.  Anyone interested in trying out should see Ms. Clise in Room 225 to get paperwork or  get your name on the tryout list.

African American Heritage/Black History Month (Serino): McNair ES in Germantown is named for a physicist and astronaut, Dr. Ronald McNair. When he was 9, McNair refused to leave a segregated library without being allowed to check out books. The library is now named for him.  He met his untimely death during the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger when  he was just 36.

 African American Heritage/Black History Month (Serino):  The newest MCPS school was named for Bayard Rustin, an activist and leader who fought for civil rights and gay rights.  He helped organize Freedom Rides, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the fight for equality in employment.

African American Heritage/Black History Month (Serino): Drew ES in Silver Spring was named for Dr. Charles Drew, a DC native whose breakthrough research with blood transfusions and storage led to critical blood banks in WWII.  He resigned from the American Red Cross in 1950 in protest of their practice of segregating  blood donations, a practice that continued to 1950.

Event for African American Heritage Month:  

On Sunday, February 17,  take a tour of the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s African American art collection at 10:30 a.m.  and then stick around and learn how to edit and then create new articles on African American artists on Wikipedia. RSVP on the Smithsonian events page for the Wikipedia-Edit-A-Thon.
