Mental Health Awareness Month (Counseling)

This is a personal story from someone who experienced ADHD or Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder– “I remember the day I learned I had ADHD. I was about 8 years old and sitting in the back seat of the car. We were driving past the firehouse in the center of town, and my mom asked if I would agree to do go to the doctor to help me concentrate. At the time, I was struggling in school. I was having trouble getting my work done, I would also get in trouble in class for doing impulsive things — for being crazy. Then she told me I had ADHD and that it was a chronic disorder. Doctors now know that the right medications and a good educational setting can make a huge difference in helping a child learn to cope with his or her symptoms. I am a typical teenager in many ways. I play video games, read a lot, and like to riff on my guitar and drums. And I love sports too. But when something doesn’t interest me, it’s a titanic struggle for me to focus on it. My treatment has helped me a lot but it takes willpower. Now I feel more confident, less hyper and I can be more successful.”

Coloring Table At Lunch (Counseling) - Every day until the end of the month there will be a table at lunch with coloring  materials for students to distress and use their creativity by expressing their feelings through art.

Mental Health Awareness Month (Counseling)This is a personal story from someone who experienced anxiety – You never know what someone might be struggling with based on her or his appearance. Anxiety is a real issue that I fight to conquer every day. In the past, I hid behind my appearance to keep others from knowing about my war with anxiety on the inside. I no longer hide. I was diagnosed with an Anxiety Disorder and sought help only because it was affecting my grades. I started experiencing panic attacks, one being so extreme that I thought I was going to die. I remember continually feeling stupid and weak that certain things were more difficult for me than my peers and after a while I stopped sharing how I felt. Seeking help was not a sign of weakness; it was a sign of strength. I was courageous! This realization made it possible for me to get better and pursue my dreams.

Halloween in the Media Center (Salnick):  There will be special Halloween activities in the Media Center next Monday and Tuesday!  Come on Monday if you want to participate in a cool Break Out activity.  Come on Tuesday if you want to make a pumpkin lantern.
