Common Sense Media Lessons at RHMS

Digital citizenship, the practice of being safe, smart and ethical while online, has become an area of focus for educators and families as the 24/7 digital lifestyle becomes increasingly pervasive at school and home. The curriculum, which covers issues such as privacy, cyberbullying, internet safety and other digital dilemmas will be taught across math, world studies, English, science and health classes to all Rocky Hill students during the 2017-2018 school year.

A healthy media diet balances three things: what kids do, how much time they spend doing it, and whether their content choices are age-appropriate. Mixing media and tech time with other activities will help families find that happy medium. Use the Family Media Agreement and Device Contract to set realistic rules that make sense for your family so you and your kids can make the most out of media and tech time. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/family-media-agreement

Academic Eligibility and Extracurricular Activities

Students must maintain a 2.0 marking period average (MPA), with not more than one failing grade in the previous marking period, in order to participate in extracurricular activities during the next marking period. The MPA is not the same as the GPA. Further information can be found in MCPS Regulation IQD-RA, https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/policy/pdf/iqdrb.pdf All middle schools run an after-school extracurricular activities program and Rocky Hill does plan for activity bus service for those students who stay after the regular school day. The activities may include clubs and/or interscholastic sports. Students must meet MCPS academic eligibility criteria to participate in non-academic extracurricular activities or to stay for basketball games, dances, etc.

MCPS Radon Testing and Mitigation Program Update

Dear School Parents, Guardians, and Staff,

There have been recent news reports about elevated levels of radon in certain classrooms in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). This is to inform you that the MCPS Indoor Air Quality unit indicates that all classrooms and offices in our building are below the United States Environment Protection Agency (EPA) recommended action limit of 4.0 picocuries per liter of air (pCi/L). No action is needed at this time for our school.

As background, radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the natural breakdown (decay) of uranium which is found in soil and rock all over the United States. The EPA recommends that the radon levels above 4.0 pCi/L should be retested prior to any mitigation efforts.

Attached is a document providing facts about radon testing and whether slightly elevated levels of radon poses a safety hazard. I have also attached the Radon Testing and Mitigation Program Update from the MCPS Indoor Air Quality unit that provides an overview of the radon testing and mitigation program in MCPS. While there are no concerns of elevated levels of radon in our school, I wanted to make you aware of this information.

Sincerely,
Dr. Cynthia Eldridge
Principal
