My name is Rachel Martin, and I am the Volunteer Coordinator at VisArts, in Rockville Town Square. We are an independent nonprofit art center and an approved source of SSL Hours in Montgomery County. You may remember receiving an email from me last year. Once again, I am writing to local high school art teachers and counselors, because we are currently looking for new volunteers for our gallery program.
At VisArts, our mission is to transform individuals and communities through the visual arts. Our volunteer program is an essential part of our organization. We are responsible for the safety of the artwork we put on display. Thus, we cannot open our galleries unless we have volunteers available to remind visitors of the rules and inform us of any problems that arise. Volunteers also help us to create a welcoming environment and educate the public about the art in the galleries, as well as VisArts’ other programs in the community.
This is not the first time I have sent out a letter like this. Last year, I sent out a similar call for volunteers, and I was amazed at the response! I had nearly thirty volunteers sign up for a single orientation, and more have joined since. It’s a new school year, and I just wanted to reach out again, to thank you for your help in the past, and to reiterate that we are always looking for new volunteers!
Volunteering at VisArts is a great opportunity for students. They can learn responsibility, social skills and communication skills; and see first-hand how an art gallery is run. We especially welcome students with an interest in art: our regular volunteers get to meet the artists and learn about ways to be involved in the art world. Some of our volunteers go on to become interns in the galleries and have a chance to participate in creating exhibits.
I am including a write-up of the volunteer program for you to share with your students.
I hope you will share this opportunity with students who ask you about SSL opportunities, and those whom you feel would be a good match for our organization.
Thank you for your time.
Gallery Volunteers are needed for daytime, evening and weekend shifts during Gallery Hours: Wednesday & Thursday 12:00 – 4:00 pm, Friday 12:00 – 8:00 pm, and Saturday & Sunday 12:00 – 4:00 pm and for Special Events. Gallery Volunteers receive training and earn tuition credit toward taking art classes at VisArts, or High School Students may earn volunteer service SSL approved hours.
Volunteers must complete a 60 min orientation before they begin volunteering.
After applying online, an email will be sent to you with additional information about orientations.
