Media Center Policies and Procedures

Vision

We will provide opportunities for students and staff to become effective users of ideas and information, to gain an appreciation of literature, and to promote the library as a valuable source for research and reading.

Mission

Our media center will serve the students, the staff, and the families of McAuliffe Elementary School.

Access to resources and materials will be freely and equitably provided to all students and staff. Materials and information will be representative of diverse perspectives on historical and current issues, as well as different cultures. The collection will meet the needs of all students and will supplement the curriculum and classroom activities. Students' interests will be taken into consideration when ordering materials and when assisting students.

We will prepare students to be "information literate" by guiding them with research and use of information. Our Media Center will be a warm and welcoming environment, where students and staff will enjoy reading, researching, and learning. We will collaborate with staff, students, and families to achieve our goal of creating lifelong learners and readers, who independently seek out further learning and read for pleasure.

Hours and Access

The Media Center is open daily from 8 AM to 4 PM.  Students may check out books from 9 AM until 2:55 PM and may return books from 8:30 until 3 PM.  Staff members may select materials to check out anytime.  If the Media Staff is not available to check out materials, staff members can leave materials at the circulation desk with a name; we will check out materials as soon as possible.

Circulation Policy

Student materials are checked out for a 2 week period.  Students may check out books during Media Class or anytime during the school day with a pass from a staff member.  Books may be returned within the 2 week period for exchange.

  • Kindergarten students may check out one book at a time.
  • First and second grade students may select 2 books at a time.
  • Third, fourth and fifth grade students may check out 3 books or two books and one magazine.  One additional book can be checked out if students are working on a research project.

We do not charge fees for late books.  However, if a student has a late book, he/she will not be permitted to check out any books until the book is returned.  Overdue notices are sent home each time a group has Media Center Class.  Lost or damaged books must be paid for according to MCPS Policy.  Adjustments will be made for families with financial hardship.

If you are moving away from McAuliffe, please return your library books! We are losing many books each week from students moving away and taking the books with them. Library books cost a lot of money to replace. Please check before you leave the school to see if you owe any library books or textbooks. Thank you!

Our Collection

McAuliffe’s Media Center collection has over 10,000 print titles. There is a non-print collection which provides curricular support to the instructional program in the classroom.  Students are not permitted to check out non-print materials.

Selection guidelines established by MCPS are followed when materials are added to the collection. Input from staff and students is encouraged and appreciated. Other sources for new materials include Award Winning Book Lists, Outstanding and Notable Trade Book Lists, and journals such as Booklist and School Library Journal.

Media Center Classes

Students in grades K-2 attend Media Class several times each month.  Your child’s teacher will notify you when we have set up our schedule for the year.  Please help your child learn responsibility by returning library books on “library day.”  During Media Center classes, students in K-2 will:

  • Learn proper book care.
  • Discover new authors and a variety of types of books.
  • Share their favorite books and authors.
  • Read books that enhance their classroom curriculum.

Students in grades 3-5 will attend Media Center classes on a more flexible schedule.  Classes may come in as a homeroom to check out books, participate in sharing favorite books, and for lessons that will enhance the curriculum and broaden their knowledge.  Reading, Science and Social Studies classes may come in several times during the year to work on and complete research projects as part of the classroom curriculum.  Classroom teachers, Resource teachers, para-educators and the Media Staff will work together to make this a productive and interesting process for students.

Parent Volunteers

We need your help!  Our Media Center is a very busy place and there is always plenty to do.  If you can spare an hour or several hours during the week to help us out, we will be happy to have you.  Please contact us at 301-353-0910 for more information.
