 MCPS Attendance Policy

Children residing in the state of Maryland who are 5 years old or older and under 16 years old must attend an approved school program. Children are expected to come to school every day. Students who are absent frequently or for long periods of time will be brought to the administration's attention for appropriate action.

When a child is absent from school, a parent or guardian must call the school to report the absence. A daily record of each child's attendance is kept. Attendance check is made at 9:20 a.m. If a child is absent and the school has not received a phone call from a parent or guardian, a telephone call is made to the parent or guardian. Upon returning to school, a written explanation of each absence is required from a parent or guardian.

Recording Absences or Tardies:

  • Students will now be recorded as A.M. Absent if they arrive to school more than one hour late.
  • Students will now be recorded as P.M. Absent if they leave school more than one hour early.
  • Students will now be recorded as either A.M. Absent or P.M. Absent if they are absent from school for more than one hour during the school day.
  • Students will now be recorded as Absent for a full day if a student is present for one hour or less of the school day.

Montgomery County Public Schools considers a student’s absence excused only under the following conditions:

  • Death in immediate family
  • Illness of the student
  • Court summon
  • Hazardous weather conditions (that would endanger the health or safety of the student to be transported to and/or from school)
  • Observance of religious holidays
  • State emergency
  • Suspension
