Volunteers are needed for this summer’s Extended Learning Opportunities (ELO) program, “Summer Adventures in Learning.”

This will be the second summer of operation for the program, which will serve students from 18 Title I elementary schools who will be entering kindergarten, first, second, third and fourth grades in August. Last summer, the program served about 3,600 students. The four-week program, to be held July 7-August 1, features a four-hour day of reading, language arts, and mathematics.

Volunteer qualifications include a desire to work with young children, interest in tutoring students, ability to make a minimum total commitment of four hours and willingness to participate in a two-hour training on one of the following dates: June 18, 7-9 p.m., Carver Educational Services Center (CESC) cafeteria; June 19, 2:30-4:30 p.m., CESC cafeteria; June 25, 7-9 p.m., Watkins Mill High School; or June 26, 7-9 p.m., Wheaton High School. Volunteers will be able to choose their school location and grade level where possible.

The Title I elementary schools that will again benefit from the summer program are Broad Acres and Burnt Mills (Northeast Consortium); Highland View, New Hampshire Estates, Montgomery Knolls, Oak View, Pine Crest, Rolling Terrace and East Silver Spring (Blair Cluster); Highland (Einstein Cluster); Kemp Mill (Kennedy Cluster); Harmony Hills, Viers Mill, Weller Road and Wheaton Woods (Wheaton Cluster); and Gaithersburg, Rosemont and Summit Hall (Gaithersburg Cluster).
