Shebra Evans Selected as President of the Montgomery County Board of Education

Shebra Evans was selected by her colleagues on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 to serve as president of the Montgomery County Board of Education. Patricia O’Neill was elected as vice president. Both officers will serve a one-year term.

“I am honored to be chosen by my peers to serve as president of the Board as we look to plan for the future,” Ms. Evans said. “I look forward to working closely with my colleagues, the leadership of Montgomery County Public Schools, the County Council, and the County Executive to ensure the more than 163,000 students in our district receive a world-class education that helps them meet their fullest potential.”

Ms. Evans, a resident of Silver Spring, was elected to her first four-year term in 2016. For the past year she has served as the vice president of the Board and a member of the Board’s Fiscal Management Committee. Mrs. Evans serves on the Maryland Association of Boards of Education's Resolution Committee, as well as the Policies and Procedures Committee.

Ms. Evans received a degree in Economics and Finance from Tennessee State University. She has two children who attend MCPS schools.

Ms. O’Neill, a resident of Bethesda, is serving her sixth term on the Board of Education and is currently the longest serving member of the Board. She has served as vice president and president of the Board several times, each. For the past year, Ms. O’Neill has served as the chair of the Policy Management Committee.

Ms. O’Neill served as president of the Maryland Association of Boards of Education (MABE) and co-chair of the Washington Area Boards of Education. She has served on numerous advisory committees for education-related issues, including the Maryland Blue Ribbon Panel on Teen Pregnancy and the Maryland Comparable HSA Task Force. In 2009, MABE selected Mrs. O’Neill to receive the Charles A. Willis Award in recognition of her outstanding service at the local and state level. Prior to joining the Board, Mrs. O’Neill was active in the PTA in the Walt Whitman Cluster and served in various volunteer and leadership roles.

Mrs. O’Neill is a graduate of Walter Johnson High School and has a degree in social science from Southern Methodist University. She has two daughters who are graduates of MCPS.
