Board of Education Sets Calendar for 2019–2020 School Year

November 13, 2018

The Board of Education adopted the school year calendar for the 2019–2020 school year during its Nov. 13, 2018 meeting.

The school year will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019, and the last day of school is scheduled for Monday, June 15, 2020. The calendar includes 182 days of instruction, a 10-day spring break, one full day of planning and professional development between semesters; and two operational closures in September and October.

See the calendar for all closures and early release days.

The overall time frame of the traditional school year calendar established by Governor Larry Hogan’s Executive Order of August 31, 2016, (amended October 11, 2016) remains in place for the 2019–2020 school year. The calendar was developed to comply with closings required by state law, guidance from the state superintendent of schools regarding emergency make-up days, and early release days that are contractually required by the Montgomery County Education Association.

This year, MCPS took the unprecedented step to survey and communicate individually with every staff member and family in the MCPS community. The 2019–2020 calendar took into account results and feedback from this survey, as well as feedback from an internal MCPS work group and a focus group of external parties representing nine various community groups.
