Maryland STEM Festival to Showcase Award-Winning Electric Car Built by MCPS Students

November 9, 2018

Montgomery County Public Schools and educational partners will showcase elementary, middle and high school science, technology, engineering and math opportunities with engaging hands-on activities and dynamic demonstrations at a STEM Festival Showcase on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Northwood High School in Silver Spring. Featured will be an electric car designed, built and driven by the Wheaton High School  Society of Women Engineers, whose entry won the 6th annual Washington Electric Vehicle Grand Prix on September 8.

As an official 2018 Maryland STEM Festival event, the MCPS STEM Festival Showcase is among hundreds of community-based events that are showcasing STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities for Maryland residents. The mission of the festival is to encourage students, regardless of age, background and experience, to take a greater interest in STEM with the hope that they will pursue a STEM-related career.

Founded in 2015, the Maryland STEM Festival has become one of the leading STEM events in the state. Maryland is one of the few states in the nation to have a statewide STEM or science festival. Through a ten-day series of community-based events each fall (hosted by schools, colleges, libraries, museums, parks, businesses and other local organizations), the festival celebrates the economic, educational and cultural impact of STEM in Maryland.

“STEM is for everyone regardless of their background or experience; STEM is the basis for everything we do, and most importantly STEM is  fun! The Maryland STEM Festival wants to bring that fun to every Maryland resident,” said Phil Rogofsky, festival director. For more information on the Maryland STEM Festival, visit www.marylandstemfestival.org.

The free, family-friendly event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Northwood High School, 919 University Blvd. West, Silver Spring.
