County Officials to Celebrate Walk To School Day at Gaithersburg Elementary School Oct. 10

Montgomery County Councilmember Sidney Katz, Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman, and Dr. Jack Smith, superintendent, Montgomery County Public Schools will celebrate Walk to School Day at Gaithersburg Elementary School on Wednesday, October 10.

Joining them will be Principal Meredith McNerney, Michael Paylor, division chief, Montgomery County Department of Transportation, Montgomery County Police Department personnel, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services personnel and Gaithersburg Elementary School students, patrols, staff and parents.

Note to Editors: The students will use the crosswalk on Teachers Way as part of a County effort to remind pedestrians of all ages to use the crosswalk, while also reminding drivers to be alert for pedestrians. The event will feature safety characters Sparky the Firedog and Zeal the Crosswalk Zebra as well as public safety equipment such as a fire engine.

Schedule:

8:40 – Meet at Gaithersburg Middle School to join Gaithersburg Elementary students, staff, and parents for the walk

8:55 – Officials, Sparky and Zeal will accompany children as they use the crosswalk at Teachers Way, toward Gaithersburg Elementary School

9:15 – Following the walk, students will assemble on the blacktop next to the school

  • Students recite Pledge of Allegiance and Safety Patrols recite the Patrol Pledge
  • Greetings by Mrs. Meredith McNerney, Principal, Gaithersburg Elementary School
  • Sidney Katz, Montgomery County Councilmember
  • Jud Ashman, Mayor, City of Gaithersburg
  • Dr. Jack Smith, Superintendent, Montgomery County Public Schools
  • Michael Paylor, Division Chief, Montgomery County Dept. of Transportation
