Council Highlights Expanded Full-Day K and Elementary Gyms

June 18, 2002
Council President Steven Silverman and Council Member Marilyn Praisner will highlight the expansion of full-day Kindergarten and the construction of elementary school gymnasiums during a visit to Dr. Charles R. Drew Elementary School. They will be joined by Board of Education Vice President Patricia B. O’Neill and Superintendent Jerry D. Weast.

The event will take place on Wednesday, June 19, at 9:30 a.m. in the school's all purpose room.

Budget increases will provide for construction of five elementary school gymnasiums and expand the number of schools offering full-day Kindergarten from 34 to 56.

Drew is the only elementary school that will be receiving both a gymnasium and full-day Kindergarten as a result of the $1.4 billion operating budget and $112.3 million capital budget that will go into effect on July 1.

The press event will begin with a meeting in the all-purpose room with 5th grade students and their parents, followed by a tour of Kindergarten classes.
