Board of Education Adopts Legislative Platform for 2017; Discusses Fiscal Year 2018 Budget Development
The Montgomery County Board of Education met on Monday, October 24, 2016, at the Carver Educational Services Center, 850 Hungerford Drive in Rockville. During the meeting, the Board approved a Legislative Platform for the 2017 Maryland legislative session; and received an update on the process for developing the Fiscal Year 2018 Operating Budget. 2017 Legislative Platform
The Board of Education approved a Legislative Platform (Platform) for the 2017 Maryland legislative session. The Platform represents the Board’s stance on overall legislative issues and specific legislative initiatives related to funding and accountability, local board authority, and student programs. The Board will continue to discuss legislative issues leading up to and during the 2017 session, which begins in January 2017.

Fiscal Year 2018 Operating Budget
The Board of Education received an update from MCPS staff and held a discussion on the timeline and process for developing the Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 Operating Budget. Superintendent Jack R. Smith and a team of MCPS staff have been meeting with stakeholders, including staff, parents, students, and community members to gather input on the budget and specific areas of need. The recommended budget is built in partnership with representatives from the three MCPS employee associations—the Montgomery County Education Association (MCEA), the Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals (MCAAP), and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 500—as well as the Montgomery County Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (MCCPTA). Dr. Smith will present his FY 2018 Operating Budget recommendation to the Board on December 13, 2016. The Board will then hold two work sessions on the budget before submitting a final FY 2018 Operating Budget request to the Montgomery County Executive and the Montgomery County Council in February 2017.

The Board of Education will hold public hearings on the Capital Improvements Program at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 10, and on Monday, November 14, 2016. About the Board of Education
The Montgomery County Board of Education is the official educational policymaking body in the county. The Board is responsible for the direction and operation of the public school system. The Board consists of seven county residents elected by voters for a four-year term and a student elected by secondary school students for a one-year term. Board members are elected countywide but run at-large or from the Board district in which they reside.
