Update on the Investigation into Conduct of Former MCPS Substitute

November 13, 2014

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is continuing to look into the employment record of Mr. Jose Pineda, a former substitute teacher who was recently arrested and charged with having inappropriate contact with a student at Roberto Clemente Middle School.

Since the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year, Mr. Pineda has worked at 20 schools in MCPS. The principals at these schools have been directed to send a letter home to make parents aware that Mr. Pineda worked in the school and ask them to report any information about inappropriate conduct to the police and school administration as soon as possible. A version of that letter and the schools where Mr. Pineda worked are included in the document linked below.

Over the past two days, some students at Ridgeview Middle School and Gaithersburg Elementary School have come forward and indicated they had interactions with Mr. Pineda that were inappropriate or made them feel uncomfortable. The parents of these students have been consulted and the police are investigating these allegations. Mr. Pineda had worked at Ridgeview Middle School for 29 days and Gaithersburg Elementary School for three days since the beginning of last school year.

If there are any other reports of inappropriate conduct involving Mr. Pineda, we will work with the police to ensure the matter is investigated in a timely and thorough manner.
