MCPS Summer Food Service Program Will Provide Thousands of Free Meals

Thousands of Montgomery County children in various summer school or summer recreation programs will receive free, nutritious meals as part of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Summer Food Service Program.

Funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the MCPS Summer Food Service Program was created in 1976 to help bridge the summer break nutrition gap. More than 35 percent of children in MCPS are eligible for Free and Reduced-price Meals during the school year, and that number has grown dramatically in recent years.

This summer, MCPS expects that nearly 10,000 students will receive meals at more than 115 sites, including eight walk-in locations where children 18 and under can come in for a free meal. Meals at the walk-in sites are available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Staff from the MCPS Division of Food and Nutrition Services prepare and deliver the food to all of the program sites in the county. Last year, the program provided more than 200,000 meals.

The school-based walk-in sites are: Fox Chapel, Gaithersburg and Maryvale elementary schools; Argyle and Francis Scott Key middle schools; and Montgomery Blair and John F. Kennedy high schools. Meals will also be provided at one faith-based location, Millian Memorial UMC Church in Rockville.

The MCPS Summer Food Service Program partners include the Montgomery County Council, Maryland Hunger Solutions, the Maryland State Department of Education, the Montgomery County Department of Recreation, the City of Gaithersburg, the City of Rockville, the Judy Center and Linkages to Learning.
