Walk Your Child to School Day Will be Observed on Wednesday, October 4

September 15, 2000
Schools throughout Montgomery County are encouraged to join thousands of students, parents and community leaders around the nation who will be participating in Walk Your Child to School Day on Wednesday, October 4.

The event is held to promote safety, health, physical activity, and protection of the environment. A growing concern for clean air and children's health and safety helped initiate the event in 1997. Last year, more than 300,000 community members in 34 states joined in Walk Your Child to School Day. East Silver Spring Elementary School was the only MCPS school to participate in the event.

At its September 12 meeting, the Montgomery County Board of Education passed a resolution proclaiming October 4 "Walk Our Children to School Day" in Montgomery County and encouraging individual school communities to observe the day. Several MCPS schools already have indicated their support, and others are expected to join.

This year, the United States will join with Great Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa to create the first ever International Walk to School Day. For more information about the effort, check out the website: http://www.walktoschool-usa.org.
