Robert Frost MS Selected as Maryland Blue Ribbon School

December 20, 2012
The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has selected Robert Frost Middle School as one of six 2013 Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools. The Rockville school will now compete to become the 36th National Blue Ribbon School in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).

“Congratulations to the staff, students, and community of Robert Frost Middle School,” said Superintendent of Schools Joshua P. Starr. “This award is a fitting recognition for the outstanding work being done by so many in the Frost community.”

Principal Joey Jones was present in Baltimore when State Superintendent of Schools Lillian M. Lowery made the announcement.

“Frost is a great school because we have a dedicated staff, strong parent and community support, and outstanding students,” Dr. Jones said. “I am proud to be the principal of such a wonderful school and appreciate the recognition from the state.”

The schools are recognized on the basis of rigorous state and national requirements for high achievement and dramatic improvement. The students at Blue Ribbon schools perform at the top 15 percent on Maryland state assessments in reading and mathematics, according to MSDE.

Only one other middle school was named a Maryland Blue Ribbon School—Folly Quarter Middle in Howard County. The remaining 2013 Maryland Blue Ribbon winners are Chadwick Elementary School in Baltimore County; Charlesmont Elementary School in Baltimore County; Century High School in Carroll County, and Boonsboro High School in Washington County.

The schools will be invited by the U.S. Department of Education to apply to be a National Blue Ribbon School.  Frost Middle and the other winning schools will receive a Maryland Blue Ribbon flag, a monetary prize, an indoor Blue Ribbon School mural, an interactive whiteboard, and a schoolwide pizza party.  A dinner in Annapolis will be held in honor of the winning schools on March 11.

Earlier this year, Rachel Carson Elementary School was named a Maryland and National Blue Ribbon School for 2012.
