MCPS Board of Education Community Conversation Set for Nov. 14

The Montgomery County Board of Education will hold a Community Conversation event on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, to engage the community in a discussion on the values that should guide the school system in the future. Space is limited so those wishing to participate are strongly encouraged to sign up in advance.

The event will take place at Richard Montgomery High School, 250 Richard Montgomery Drive in Rockville, 7–9 p.m. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Foreign language interpretation will be available at the event in Spanish, French, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese. Free childcare also will be available for attendees. Sign language interpretation will be available upon request.

During the event, attendees will work in small groups and have an opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas on the values that should shape Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), as well as guide the Board’s actions and decisions as it confronts the challenges facing the school district.

“We invite parents, students, staff and community members to join us in this important conversation about our core values. These values will guide the Board of Education as it plans for the school district’s future,” said Shirley Brandman, President of the Montgomery County Board of Education. “Furthermore, these core values will more clearly define the kind of school system we want to create and sustain for all of our students. We have a great school system, but we need to hear from the community on how we can make it even better."

The Board is in the process of updating the MCPS strategic plan—Our Call to Action: Pursuit of Excellence. Input gathered from this event will assist the Board in its effort to set priorities for the school system.

The Board of Education has held a variety of community forums since 2004 in an effort to foster greater public involvement in the development of the MCPS strategic plan and operating budget.
