MCPS to Hold Back-to-School Fair and Opening Day Press Event to Celebrate the Start of the 2012-2013 School Year

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will celebrate the start of the 2012-2013 school year with two events that the media are welcome to attend—the annual Back-to-School Fair on Saturday, August 25, and with a press event on Monday, August 27, at the new Flora M. Singer Elementary School.

The MCPS Back-to-School Fair
Saturday, August 25, 2012, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Carver Educational Services Center, 850 Hungerford Drive, in Rockville.

More than 10,000 people are expected at the annual Back-to-School Fair, which will feature something for everyone—information and resources for parents, children’s activities and entertainment.

Free backpacks and school supplies will be available to MCPS students who need them. Gift certificates and prizes will be given out throughout the day and free refreshments will be provided. Highlights of the day will include student and community performance groups, appearances by local celebrities and health screenings. MCPS staff members will be available to answer questions and provide information on a variety of topics, including Curriculum 2.0, consortia and magnet programs, classroom instruction and much more.


Back-to-School Press Conference

Flora M. Singer Elementary School, 2600 Hayden Drive, Silver Spring

More than 149,000 students are expected for the first day of school on Monday. Superintendent of Schools Joshua P. Starr and Montgomery County Board of Education President Shirley Brandman will join Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett and Montgomery County Council President Roger Berliner for a media event to discuss the coming school year. Following the press conference, guests will be invited to tour this brand new school and visit with students in their classrooms.
