Board of Education Begins Naming Process for New School

The Montgomery County Board of Education met on Monday, February 27, 2012 at the Carver Educational Services Center, 850 Hungerford Drive in Rockville. Among other items, the Board began the process for the naming of a new elementary school in the Downcounty Consortium and referred Board Policy CNA, Informational Materials and Announcements, for review by the Board’s Policy Committee.

Naming of Downcounty Consortium Elementary School #29

The Board of Education began the process for naming a new elementary school in the Downcounty Consortium by submitting four names for consideration. The new elementary school will open in August, 2012 in the McKenney Hills area. The four names submitted by the Board were Mary McLeod Bethune, Charles Gilchrist, Josiah Henson and Flora Singer. The principal of the new school will begin the school naming process, which will involve a community group, which may consider the Board’s submissions, as well as others. Board Policy CNA, Informational Materials and Announcements

The Board of Education voted to have its policy committee review
Board Policy CNA, which guides the distribution of informational material and announcements to students in Montgomery County Public Schools. Currently, non-profit organizations can disseminate information to students at four designated times throughout the year. The policy is the result of a federal appeals court decision. The Board’s Policy Committee will meet at a future date to discuss Policy CNA. The meeting will be open to the public. Any changes to the policy will go before the entire Board of Education and will involve a period of public comment. Read the resolution

Work Session on Self-Evaluation Tool

The Board held a work session to discuss the tool it will use to evaluate itself and the work of the Board. The goals of the work session were to attain a shared understanding of the importance of the Board conducting a self-evaluation and attain agreement on the key content of the self-evaluation tool. Other Action
 
Approved a request for a $4 million supplemental appropriation to pay for relocatable classrooms that are part of the FY 2013-2018 Capital Improvements Program.
Set the fees for summer school at the same level as last summer.

update on legislation pending before the Maryland General Assembly.

Resolutions: The Board unanimously approved the following:

A resolution declaring March 2012 Women’s History Month
A resolution recognizing all MCPS teachers who received certification in 2011 through the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards.

About the Board of Education

The Montgomery County Board of Education is the official educational policymaking body in the county. The Board is responsible for the direction and operation of the public school system. The Board consists of seven county residents elected by voters for a four-year term and a student elected by secondary school students for a one-year term. Board members are elected countywide but run at-large or from the Board district in which they reside.
