Young Professionals Conference Provides Students with Career Tips
The Ninth Annual Young Professionals Conference will be held on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG), beginning at 8 a.m. Sponsors of this student-centered event are the Montgomery County Business Roundtable for Education (MCBRE), Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery College, and USG. MCBRE was founded in 2001 to foster partnerships between business and education in Montgomery County.
More than 700 high school juniors enrolled in career pathway programs will have the opportunity to experience a professional development conference designed for them. The program includes a keynote address by Washington Post columnist John Kelly, interactive breakout sessions, an entrepreneurship competition, and a networking lunch. Eight $500 scholarships, sponsored by MCBRE, will be awarded.
The interactive workshops are a highlight of the event. Approximately twenty workshops are run by business partners who volunteer their time to conduct these sessions. The workshops are designed to open the students' minds to new ideas, concepts and job opportunities in their fields of interest. Conference experiences complement the instruction that students have been receiving through their career pathways.
The career pathway programs that the students participate in include the National Academy of Finance; National Academy of Information Technology; Hospitality; Advanced Engineering–Project Lead The Way; the CISCO Networking Academy; Biosciences; Entrepreneurship; and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
