Charles Haughey Elected Board President

Sharon Cox Will Serve as Vice President of the Board

Dr. Charles Haughey was elected president of the Board of Education on the fourth ballot by a five-vote majority, and Ms. Sharon Cox was elected vice president of the Board on the 14th ballot by a five-vote majority. The election occurred during the Board's regularly scheduled business meeting on Tuesday, December 13. Both new officers will serve for a one-year term.

Dr. Haughey began his first term as a Board member in 2002 and served as vice president of the Board for the past year. He has served as chair of the Board's Research and Evaluation Subcommittee and as a member of the Audit Committee and the Ad Hoc Committee on Special Education. He is co-chair of the Washington Area Boards of Education. A former teacher and administrator, Dr. Haughey has extensive experience in education at the local, state, and national levels. His two daughters attended Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).

Ms. Cox, the parent of an MCPS student, previously has served as president and vice president of the Board. She has served as chair of the Policy Committee and as a member of the Ad Hoc Committee on Special Education and the Communications and Public Engagement Committee. Cox serves on the board and is chair of the Legislative Committee of the Maryland Association of Boards of Education. Prior to her election to the Board of Education, she was communications coordinator for the Montgomery County Collaboration Council for Children, Youth and Families.
