Founder of Earth Day Honored at Oakland Terrace ES

Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan honored U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, the founder of Earth Day and Montgomery County resident, for his lifelong contributions on behalf of the environment.

The event took place at Oakland Terrace Elementary School on Friday, April 22, at 11:00 a.m. Senator Nelson’s grandson attends Oakland Terrace Elementary School.
Duncan was joined by Senator Nelson and his family and Oakland Terrace Elementary School Principal Cheryl Pulliam.

Highlights of the ceremony included:

Performance by Grammy-award winners Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, who sang two original environmentally-oriented songs.
Dedication and planting of a tree in Senator Nelson’s honor.
Environmental song by a first grade class that includes Senator Nelson’s grandson.
Reading of a poem written by fifth grade twins who are on the school’s recycling team.
