Students Honored for Anti-Smoking Radio Messages

Students throughout Maryland were invited to enter an original 60 second public service announcement (PSA) concerning the dangers of tobacco use. The contest, “Be A Radio Idol,” was sponsored by smokingstopshere.com. Six of the eight semifinalists were students from Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). Winning MCPS students, their school, and the title of their entry are:

Middle School Semi-Finalists
· "Silky, Smooth... and Stupid," Stevie Barnett, Gaithersburg Middle School
· "Beware Killer Smoke," Mayra Pinedo, Col. E. Brooke Lee Middle School
· "Smoking is Never a Good Thing," Stephanie Salguoro, Col. E. Brooke Lee Middle School

High School Semi-Finalists
· "Date With Death," Evan Samek & Adam Levin, Thomas S. Wootton High School
· "The Truth," Dylan Quiroga, Albert Einstein High School
· "Pointless," Lea Gallagher, Albert Einstein High School

The first place PSAs by middle school and high school students were the creation of students from Carroll and Washington counties and will be produced for air on radio. All the PSA scripts can be viewed at the link below.
